Yiyun Li (李翊雲) made her debut as a novelist in 2009 with The Vagrants, a luminously written story set in China in the late 1970s when the Democracy Wall Movement rocked Beijing. Her reading will be followed by a conversation with Professor Jon von Kowallis.

Yiyun Li grew up in Beijing and immigrated to the United States in 1996. Her stories and essays have been widely published. Her debut collection, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, PEN/Hemingway Award, Guardian First Book Award and California Book Award for first fiction. It was also shortlisted for Kiriyama Prize and Orange Prize for New Writers. She was selected by Granta as one of the 21 Best Young American Novelists under 35. Her first novel, The Vagrants, was published in 2009, to great acclaim. She teaches at the University of California, Davis.
